Send Something Special to Your Favorite Senior

Do you have an elderly relative living alone or in a senior community who lives too far to visit?  How about sending something special to show your thinking of them even if it’s not their birthday or a holiday.  One idea is to send them a gift basket filled with goodies to eat and drink, gifts to entertain, and items to make their lives a little easier or more pleasant.

For your coffee drinking parent or grandparent, a bag of gourmet coffee and a nice new mug is one way to start your basket, or add a collection of teas that include decaffeinated and herbal options.  Do they love chocolate or prefer salty snacks?  Adjust your selection to include high-end chocolates and other delightful treats or a nice selection of crackers and cheeses.  For a book lover, add a novel you think they would enjoy or a coffee table book on famous gardens, architecture, maps, photography or wherever matches their interest.

Now pack the basket with items such as jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, word-search books, a new coloring book and fresh colored pencils or markers.  If they have low vision, include large print playing cards and books.  If your loved one is feeling anxious or having a hard time sleeping, give them a weighted blanket.  While they come in many sizes, it is suggested you choose one that is 10% percent of their weight.   For example, if they weigh 150lbs, buy a 15lb blanket, and if they do not have a blanket that exactly matches 10% of their weight, you can go up a couple of pounds.

Lower Your Risk of a Stroke

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that every 40 seconds a person has a stroke and every 3 minutes and 14 seconds someone dies from one.  While that is alarming, the CDC says that almost 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.

Did you know that one of the leading causes of strokes is high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and is the most prevalent health condition facing Americans? Statistics show nearly half (48%) of US adults have hypertension, and as people age, their blood pressure goes up.  Experts believe about 70% of people 65 years and older have hypertension and should take steps to reduce it.  If you fall into that age group or are at risk for HBP, start by regularly monitoring your blood pressure.  If high, work with your doctor to find ways to lower it including getting more exercise and eating a healthy diet.

Another way to help prevent strokes is to quit smoking.  Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream and forces the heart to work harder, which in turn, increases the likelihood of blood clots.  Also, if you are diabetic, you need to manage the disease.  The American Diabetes Association reports that diabetics are two to four times more likely to have a stroke than someone without the disease.

Exercise is another way to lower your risk.  Doctors say 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, like a brisk walk, yoga or dancing are beneficial.  Moreover, if you are overweight, try to lose weight as obesity puts you at risk for any number of health issues including stroke.  And don’t forget to get your cholesterol checked.  The AHA recommends everyone 20 years of age and over should have it done at least every 5 years.   Check with your healthcare provider regarding other risks for stroke.

At MorningStar of Mission Viejo, we have 64 stylish suites for independent living, 38 assisted living suites and another 30 suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. Our many services, wellness programs and activities are designed to support and enhance residents’ physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing. Study Shows Link Between Hearing Loss and Cognitive Decline

According to the Medical News Today website, studies find hearing loss may contribute to social isolation, lower quality of life, disability, depression, and dementia. This can be especially problematic for people aged 80 years and older, who tend to have more advanced hearing losses.

In 2015, researchers reported on a 25-year study, which focused on a link between hearing loss and dementia. At the start of the study, the 3,670 participants were 65 years or older and followed for over 25 years. Using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to measure cognitive decline, researchers say there appeared to be a correlation between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline. However, participants who used hearing aids did not show a significant cognitive decline, suggesting the use of hearing aids may offer a protective effect.

Experts say hearing loss may adversely impact a person’s ability to socialize as they miss out on vital verbal and emotional information that may directly impair brain structure and function. Or it could be that the person uses more energy to make sense of what they hear; and reduces the energy they have left for memory, language processing and attention. It is recommended at age 60, all adults get a baseline hearing test and be rechecked every couple of years, regardless of whether they experience symptoms. John Hopkins Medicine reports one in 3 adults over age 65 has hearing loss, but due to a gradual change in their hearing, they may not be aware of it.

Symptoms of age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, include the speech of others sounding muffled or slurred; high-pitched sounds, such as “s” or “th” being hard to distinguish; and having difficulty understanding conversation, especially if there is background noise. The person may notice men’s voices are easier to hear than women’s, because it is lower-pitched.

If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, MorningStar of Hayward is ready to help. Along with independent and assisted living, we provide comprehensive memory care that supports residents and their families with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) in Seniors

As the brilliance of autumn gives way to the shorter days and longer nights of winter, many individuals, including seniors, may find themselves grappling with a peculiar form of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Especially for residents of assisted living Lakewood facilities, understanding SAD, its symptoms, and the support structures available is essential to ensuring emotional well-being during these colder months. This becomes all the more significant in environments like senior living Lakewood communities and for those under memory care Lakewood programs, where holistic health is a priority.

Recognizing the Signs of SAD

  • Mood Changes: One of the most prominent signs of SAD is a persistent feeling of sadness or depression that coincides with the change in seasons. This may manifest as feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or irritability.

  • Altered Sleep Patterns: Residents in senior living Lakewood communities might experience trouble sleeping, insomnia, or even the opposite, an increased desire to sleep.

  • Weight Fluctuations: Changes in appetite, especially cravings for foods high in carbohydrates, can lead to weight gain.

  • Decreased Energy: A noticeable decrease in energy, difficulty concentrating, or feeling sluggish and agitated can also be indicators.

  • Social Withdrawal: An increased desire to avoid social activities, even routine interactions in assisted living Lakewood settings, can be a sign.

  • Feelings of Despair: In extreme cases, recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation can occur and should be addressed immediately.

Finding Support and Overcoming SAD

  • Light Therapy: Given that SAD often results from the reduced availability of natural sunlight in fall and winter, light therapy boxes can be beneficial. These mimic outdoor light, causing a chemical change in the brain that lifts mood.

  • Counseling: Talk therapy can be highly effective. Within the nurturing environment of memory care Lakewood programs, seniors can engage in sessions that help them navigate their feelings and find coping strategies.

  • Medication: Some seniors benefit from antidepressant treatments. Consulting with a healthcare professional is essential to find the right medication and dosage.

  • Stay Active: Engaging in physical activity, even light exercises, can reduce the symptoms of SAD. Many senior living Lakewood communities offer indoor fitness programs that can be beneficial.

  • Engage in Social Activities: While the inclination might be to withdraw, staying socially active and engaged can serve as a mood booster. Participating in community events, group activities, or even simple interactions can help.

  • Stay Informed: Knowledge is empowering. Attending workshops or informational sessions on mental health can provide insights and coping techniques.

In conclusion, while Seasonal Affective Disorder can pose challenges, understanding its manifestations and the support structures available, especially within environments like assisted living Lakewood, can pave the way for better mental health. By recognizing the signs early and seeking the appropriate support, seniors can navigate the colder months with resilience and optimism.

Warm Up with These Senior-Friendly Exercise Routines for Cooler Days

As the cool embrace of fall settles in, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes ever more vital, especially for the elderly. While the chilly weather might encourage staying indoors, it doesn’t mean activity should wane. For residents of assisted living Lakewood communities, those in senior living Lakewood facilities, and individuals enrolled in memory care Lakewood programs, integrating senior-friendly exercise routines can be both a delightful way to stay warm and a means to enhance overall well-being.

  • Chair Exercises: A simple yet effective way to get the blood flowing without standing up is chair exercises. From seated leg lifts to chair marches, these routines can be done comfortably while watching the morning news or listening to music. Many senior living Lakewood communities offer guided chair exercise sessions, perfect for group participation.

  • Walking Indoors: Corridors and communal spaces in assisted living Lakewood facilities can serve as perfect avenues for a brisk walk. Walking aids in cardiovascular health and keeps the joints mobile. Consider setting a daily goal or walking with a buddy for added motivation.

  • Stretching: Gentle stretching can work wonders to alleviate muscle stiffness that often accompanies cooler days. Incorporate basic stretches for the neck, arms, legs, and back. These can be done independently or under the guidance of professionals in memory care Lakewood programs, especially tailored for those with mobility concerns.

  • Tai Chi: Known for its fluid movements and meditative pace, Tai Chi is an excellent exercise for balance, coordination, and relaxation. With its origins in ancient China, this practice focuses on slow, rhythmic movements paired with deep breathing.

  • Resistance Band Workouts: Resistance bands are versatile and offer a safe method to build strength. From seated rows to leg presses, the range of exercises with resistance bands caters to various muscle groups and can be easily adjusted to suit individual strength levels.

  • Dance: Put on some favorite tunes and sway to the rhythm. Dancing is not just a mood booster but also a fantastic way to improve flexibility and coordination. Many senior living Lakewood communities organize dance sessions or even dance therapy for residents.

  • Balance Exercises: Improving balance is crucial for preventing falls. Simple routines like heel-to-toe walk, leg lifts, or even standing on one foot while holding onto a stable surface can be beneficial.

  • Guided Meditation and Deep Breathing: While this may not seem like a typical ‘exercise,’ guided meditation sessions, often paired with deep breathing exercises, can significantly enhance lung capacity and provide relaxation.

In conclusion, cooler days shouldn’t mean cooler activity levels. With a plethora of senior-friendly exercises at their disposal, residents of assisted living Lakewood and other such facilities have the tools they need to stay active, warm, and vibrant during the fall season. Embrace the chill with movement, and let the golden years shine even brighter.

How Does Personality Affect Aging?

The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published an interesting article from the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a longitudinal study of older Chicago-area adults that began in 1997. The intent of the survey was to determine if personalities affect cognitive decline, and included nearly 2,000 people.

The study focused on examining the role of three key personality traits – conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism – to see if they are a factor in cognitive decline in later life. Researchers say evidence suggests being more conscientious and extroverted may keep mild cognitive impairment at bay longer. Participants who exhibited higher levels of neuroticism increased their chances of cognitive decline.

The lead author of the study, Tomiko Yoneda, a psychology postdoctoral student at the University of Victoria in Canada, explains, "Personality traits reflect relatively enduring patterns of thinking and behaving, which may cumulatively affect engagement in healthy and unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns across the lifespan." Extroverted, socially engaged people appeared to have an additional year of dementia-free living; and those who scored high on conscientiousness might have two more years without cognitive issues as compared with those who scored low in conscientiousness.

While other studies back up these results, scientists agree further studies will be needed. For example, Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic in the Center for Brain Health at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine, cautions, while “specific traits may increase risk due to a lifetime of behaviors that predispose a person to developing cognitive decline or Alzheimer's disease, there may be more of a direct biological role related to early disease pathology."

Routine Health Screenings Are Important for Older Adults

As we age, it is important to stay up-to-date with our health care including routine screenings as many diseases do not show signs of symptoms until the problem is harder to treat. Screenings also allow your physician to compare today’s readings to past tests to look for concerning signs. However, medical experts estimate over half of all adults over 65 are not current with the recommended screenings.

In many cases our age determines the type of screenings we should get. Some tests are recommended once a year, while others, like a colonoscopy, may be based on past test results and/or on the advice of your doctor.

Common screenings include annual cholesterol tests to measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Cholesterol tests can help “determine your risk for the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).” Your blood pressure should be checked each time you visit a healthcare professional, and if readings are high, it should be monitored.

Mammograms are a valuable tool to help detect breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women 50 to 74 with an average risk of breast cancer get a mammogram every two years. For younger women and those with a higher risk, consult with your doctor.

Other types of screenings for seniors include annual skin checks to look for signs of skin cancer and bone density tests to check for loss of tissue and bone, which might indicate early signs of osteoporosis. Eye exams are important to screen for cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Hearing tests can help seniors get the help they need if there is a problem. Talk to your doctor about which tests they recommend for you.

Protect Your Memory With Healthy Habits

Studies suggest that while some memory decline is inevitable with aging, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain and enhance memory function as well as our overall brain health. The US News & World Report says one of the things we can do is to routinely be physically active as studies show it provides a lower risk of mental decline and Alzheimer's disease.

They explain physical activity optimizes blood flow to the entire body including the brain and helps keep our memories sharp. However, the type of physical exercise is important and should include a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio such as power walking, running, biking or swimming. (Before beginning any new exercise, experts say check with your healthcare provider).

If you worry about forgetting things, Dr. Vernon Williams, a sports neurologist and founding director of the Center for Sports Neurology and Pain Medicine at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, says for most of us it is normal. He states all of us forget things like where we put our keys or when our doctor appointment is, which is typically not a reason for concern. Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia are different and cause more consistent memory problems that have a debilitating effect on a person's quality of life.

Along with physical exercise, other strategies to improve and protect memory include challenging our brain by learning new things, sleeping well and eating a healthy diet. Dr. Williams says adults need at least seven to nine hours of sleep a night as it “allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer's disease and other kinds of dementia.”

At MorningStar Senior Living of Hayward, we have recently remodeled apartments in a variety of floorplans and configurations. Navigating Flu Season: Health Tips for the Elderly this October

As October paints the world with its vibrant colors, it also ushers in the flu season, a period that requires added vigilance, especially for seniors. Residents in assisted living Lakewood facilities, those benefiting from senior living Lakewood communities, and individuals in memory care Lakewood programs need to be particularly mindful during these months. The confluence of cooler temperatures and influenza can pose challenges, but with the right precautions, seniors can navigate this season safely and healthily.

  • Get the Flu Shot: One of the most effective measures against influenza is the flu vaccine. Many senior living Lakewood communities organize annual flu shot clinics for their residents. It’s essential to consult with healthcare providers to ensure the vaccine is suitable, especially given any underlying health conditions.

  • Prioritize Hand Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and warm water is crucial. Hand sanitizers can also be used as an additional protective measure, especially when residents of assisted living Lakewood facilities are partaking in group activities or communal dining.

  • Boost Immunity with Nutrition: A balanced diet plays a significant role in bolstering the immune system. Incorporate seasonal fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into daily meals. Additionally, staying hydrated aids in flushing out toxins.

  • Practice Respiratory Etiquette: If sneezing or coughing, always cover the mouth and nose with a tissue or the elbow. Dispose of tissues immediately and wash hands thoroughly.

  • Stay Active: Physical activity can improve immune function. Engaging in gentle exercises tailored for seniors, be it within the confines of memory care Lakewood programs or in larger communal spaces, can be beneficial.

  • Limit Exposure: If there’s a flu outbreak, consider limiting exposure to large gatherings or crowded places. This is especially pertinent for those with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.

  • Stay Informed: Knowledge is empowering. Attend health workshops or sessions offered by senior living Lakewood communities. Staying updated on flu symptoms and preventive measures can be a game-changer.

  • Regular Health Check-ups: Routine health check-ups can help in early detection and timely treatment. Regularly monitor for flu symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or body aches.

  • Keep a Clean Environment: Ensure living spaces are clean and regularly disinfected. This is particularly vital in shared spaces within assisted living Lakewood facilities.

  • Seek Medical Advice Promptly: At the first sign of flu symptoms, it’s imperative to seek medical advice. Early intervention can lead to quicker recovery and prevent potential complications.

In conclusion, while October brings the beauty of fall, it also heralds the onset of flu season. However, with precautionary measures, timely interventions, and the supportive environment provided by facilities like assisted living Lakewood, seniors can ensure their well-being remains uncompromised. Health is wealth, and in the golden years, it’s a treasure worth safeguarding with diligence.

The Changing Needs of a Person With Alzheimer’s Disease

As Alzheimer’s disease progresses, a person’s needs change and it is important to recognize and address those changes with appropriate care. Along with meeting basic needs, experts say care providers should treat the whole person by creating an environment that allows them to feel independent and safe. The Alzheimer’s Association says determining the best care options can be tough and offers some advice on how to ensure the person has the services, programs, and caregivers in place for the best possible quality of life.

The first step to any decision regarding care is to honestly evaluate your loved one’s needs. Also, to whatever degree possible, it is recommended you include them in any decisions. Another thing to remember is during the early stages of the disease the person may be able to live independently but in the middle stages, 24-hour supervision is needed. Additionally, around-the-clock care is much more demanding in the later and end stages.

Primary points to consider include safety, especially in terms of unsupervised cooking, or if the person has a tenacity to wander or needs help with medications. Does the person have medical conditions that need monitoring such as diabetes or a mobility issue? Other problems that may demand more professional care include a person becoming aggressive or needing help with the ADLs (activities of daily living). Finally, consider if the person would benefit from more social interactions and activities.

Along with independent and assisted living in Hayward, MorningStar offers care to those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases. MorningStar of Mission Viejo Offers Individualized Memory Care

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Mission Viejo offers studio and one-bedroom suites for the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our home is honored to provide individualized, compassionate care for residents from the earliest stages of the disease to the most advanced.

The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents. As such, it means we can encourage and support independence as much as possible and let residents move freely about their environment including an enclosed courtyard. In fact, every aspect of our community from physical design to a range of purposeful activities, food service, security and more offers residents a comfortable, stress-free lifestyle.

MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care involves treating each of our residents with the respect and dignity they deserve. Even before a resident joins our community, we meet with them and their family to find out as much as we can about their background and interests as well as personal preferences. From there, we create an individualized care plan that takes all of this into consideration.

Most importantly we are blessed to have a team of individuals with big hearts who recognize it is a privilege to serve seniors. They enjoy listening to life stories, viewing family photos and making sure each one feels loved, safe, and respected. All team members, regardless of position, receive training in Radiance, which is much more than a customer service program. It is how we build a culture of consistency, authenticity and genuine concern for the needs of others and guides the way we dispense service – with sincerity, warmth and depth of purpose.

If a parent, spouse or another loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the MorningStar of Mission Viejo team is here to help. Our loving care is designed to meet their social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

Safe Outdoor Autumn Activities for Seniors

The vibrant hues of autumn create an enchanting backdrop that beckons everyone outdoors, especially those residing in assisted living Lakewood communities. The cooler temperatures, coupled with the picturesque scenery, offer seniors a refreshing opportunity to indulge in activities while reaping health benefits. For residents in senior living Lakewood facilities and those under memory care Lakewood programs, engaging in safe outdoor activities can be invigorating for both the mind and body.

  • Leaf Peeping Walks: One of the simplest joys of autumn is watching the leaves turn from green to shades of gold, red, and orange. Organized walks within the secure grounds of senior living Lakewood communities allow residents to appreciate nature’s beauty, get some exercise, and breathe in the fresh air.

  • Gardening: Autumn is a time for planting spring bulbs and tending to gardens to prepare for the next season. Gardening not only provides light physical activity but also has therapeutic benefits. Many assisted living Lakewood residences offer gardening plots for seniors to nurture their green thumbs.

  • Picnics: The crisp autumn air is perfect for outdoor picnics. Whether it’s in a designated area within the community or a nearby park, seniors can enjoy a meal amidst nature, sharing stories and making memories.

  • Bird Watching: As birds prepare to migrate, autumn becomes an ideal time for bird watching. Equipped with a bird guide and binoculars, seniors can immerse themselves in this calming activity, further fostering their connection with nature.

  • Outdoor Art Sessions: The fall palette is inspiring. Memory care Lakewood programs often incorporate art therapy for its cognitive benefits. Holding these sessions outdoors, letting seniors paint or sketch the autumnal scenes, can be both therapeutic and enjoyable.

  • Pumpkin Picking: Visiting a pumpkin patch, if close by, can be a delightful excursion. Choosing a pumpkin, enjoying hayrides, and savoring fresh apple cider make for a memorable day out.

  • Meditative Practices: The serenity of autumn provides a calming environment for meditative practices. Simple guided meditation or light tai chi exercises can be organized in outdoor spaces, promoting mental and physical well-being.

  • Photography: Capturing the essence of fall through a lens can be gratifying. Seniors can document their surroundings, creating a visual diary of their experiences, which can later be shared with family and friends.

Safety, of course, remains paramount. It’s essential that all activities are tailored to fit individual health and mobility levels, ensuring every senior can participate without any risks. The professional teams at assisted living Lakewood communities are well-equipped to facilitate and supervise these activities, guaranteeing a fun and safe autumn experience for all residents.

Most Memory Lapses are a Normal Part of Aging

If you are a senior who is always looking for your phone, readers or car keys, most likely it is a normal part of aging. Lydia Cho, a psychologist and neuropsychologist with Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, says growing older brings with it these and other memory lapses like forgetting names of people we just met or the time of our next appointment. Moreover, younger people can also be forgetful; but experts caution serious memory loss needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Thankfully most memory lapses are more a matter of not focusing or being mindful of what we are doing. For example, many times we absentmindedly set down our keys or phone while we are distracted doing other things. To keep track of commonly misplaced items, experts say set up a basket on the counter just for those things. If you are someone who always worries if you turn off the oven, you probably did it without thinking. Next time as you turn off the oven, mindfully say to yourself “I am turning off the oven.”

If you worry about forgetting where you put something, take a picture of it sitting in the drawer or the shelf in the closet. Adapting these suggestions to other things should help improve your mindfulness. Another tip when meeting someone new is to take a moment to really look at the person and say their name back to them in your greeting. If you need more help to remember their name associate it with a friend or movie character, or a rhyming word.

Normal Aging Causes Seniors to Process New Information Slower

Many of us find ourselves wondering if our brain is working as efficiently as it did when we were younger. Research shows most likely it is not. Various studies suggest memory problems often “reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention.” However, while normal aging causes seniors to process new information slower; judgement and reasoning powers remain largely intact.

Researchers say in the same way we cannot jump as high or run as fast as we did when we were children; our thinking process also begins to slow down. By the time we are in our 50s or 60s, this can interfere with remembering things, solving problems or learning new information. Structural changes in the brain regions involved in memory processing such as the hippocampus and the frontal lobes all experience anatomical and neurochemical changes as we age. Concentration can be affected by the natural loss of receptors and neurons. Outside factors such as not getting enough sleep or hearing loss can exacerbate the problem, and daily aches and pains can impact our ability to concentrate as do the medications we take to ease the pain.

If an older person does not make a point to really concentrate when taking in new information, it can cause problems with recall as they never really learned it in the first place. Experts offer practical, commonsense tips to help you more reliably process information and improve your ability to focus. Examples include playing brain games, physical exercise (it helps send more blood flow to the brain), getting out in nature, listening to music, sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night or using relaxation techniques such as meditation or mindfulness.

Boosting Immunity: Fall Foods Every Senior Should Incorporate

As the leaves turn golden and the crisp air of fall sets in, seniors, especially those in assisted living Lakewood facilities, need to pay extra attention to their immunity. The transition from summer to cooler months can sometimes challenge the immune system, but nature, in its wisdom, provides seasonal foods packed with nutrients to help us counter these effects. For residents in senior living Lakewood communities and those under memory care Lakewood programs, incorporating these fall foods can be a delightful way to boost immunity and savor the season’s flavors.

  • Pumpkins: These orange delights aren’t just for carving! Pumpkins are rich in beta-carotene which the body converts into vitamin A. This nutrient is essential for a strong immune system and is particularly beneficial for seniors. Enjoy roasted pumpkin, or add it to soups for a warm, nutritious meal.

  • Sweet Potatoes: Like pumpkins, sweet potatoes are packed with beta-carotene. They are also a great source of fiber, helping improve digestion. A simple sweet potato mash or baked sweet potato can be both tasty and health-boosting.

  • Brussels Sprouts: Often available fresh from late fall, Brussels sprouts are high in vitamin C, a vital antioxidant that can strengthen the body’s natural defenses. They can be roasted with a touch of olive oil and seasoned for a delicious side dish.

  • Pomegranates: This ruby-red fruit is not only delicious but is also a powerhouse of antioxidants. They are known to improve memory, making them a valuable addition to the diet of those in memory care Lakewood facilities.

  • Turmeric: A spice that has been hailed for its medicinal properties, turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory effects. A pinch added to warm milk or dishes can help in boosting immunity and keeping joint pains at bay.

  • Nuts and Seeds: Walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are particularly beneficial during the cooler months. They are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which can help reduce inflammation in the body. They’re a perfect snack for those chilly afternoons in senior living Lakewood residences.

  • Apples: As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Rich in dietary fiber and vitamin C, apples are a quintessential fall fruit. Enjoy them fresh or baked into warm desserts.

  • Ginger: Known for its warming properties, ginger can be a great addition to teas or dishes. It aids digestion and has immune-boosting properties, perfect for the fall season.

Incorporating these fall foods into the daily diet can be both a delightful culinary journey and a strategic health decision. As the seasons change, let’s make the most of what nature offers, ensuring that our golden years are not just comfortable, but also filled with vibrant health. Remember, it’s not just about adding years to life, but life to the years, especially in the nurturing environment of assisted living Lakewood communities.

Cataracts are the Main Cause of Vision Loss in People Over Forty

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the lens, which is normally transparent, and are the main cause of vision loss in people over 40 years of age. It is estimated more than 40 percent of Americans aged 75 years or older have some degree of lens clouding; and over half of people 80 or older have their vision significantly impaired by cataracts or have had cataract surgery. Surgery is generally recommended once vision is impaired to a degree that people have trouble reading, driving and recognizing faces. Today the surgery is a quick, safe procedure, replacing the cloudy lens with a clear plastic one.

Doctors say there are things people can do to reduce their risk of developing cataracts with quitting smoking at the top of that list. Medical News Today reports on studies linking a 3-fold increase of smoking to cataracts as well as raising the risk of several other eye conditions. A healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good quality fats (avocados, olive oil, and omega oils) and lean animal-sourced or plant-sourced proteins additionally reduces the risk of cataracts.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important as obesity increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a risk factor for cataracts. Other ways to reduce your risk include wearing UV blocking sunglasses when in the sunlight and getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. The risk for cataracts also increases with age, family history, and a history of eye inflammation or injury.

If you are not ready for surgery yet, doctors say stronger glasses and brighter lights may help. Keep up with regular eye exams and renew your eyeglass prescription as needed. Wear sunglasses in the sun and avoid night driving. As your cataracts continue to develop and eyesight worsens, at some point you will most likely need surgery.
