According to the Medical News Today website, studies find hearing loss may contribute to social isolation, lower quality of life, disability, depression, and dementia. This can be especially problematic for people aged 80 years and older, who tend to have more advanced hearing losses. 

In 2015, researchers reported on a 25-year study, which focused on a link between hearing loss and dementia. At the start of the study, the 3,670 participants were 65 years or older and followed for over 25 years. Using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to measure cognitive decline, researchers say there appeared to be a correlation between self-reported hearing loss and cognitive decline. However, participants who used hearing aids did not show a significant cognitive decline, suggesting the use of hearing aids may offer a protective effect.

Experts say hearing loss may adversely impact a person’s ability to socialize as they miss out on vital verbal and emotional information that may directly impair brain structure and function. Or it could be that the person uses more energy to make sense of what they hear; and reduces the energy they have left for memory, language processing and attention.

Aging and the Brain 

It is no secret that aging brings with it changes many of us experience including not being as sharp as we were when younger. For now evidence shows certain parts of our brains do shrink as we age, especially those areas associated with learning; and parts of our brain may not communicate with one another as well as when we were younger. In addition, blood flow may decrease, while inflammation increases, and causes problems. 

We do know some people live well into their 80s, 90s and beyond with sharp cognitive skills, and defy the widely held view of seniors’ declining abilities. NIA-supported researchers call these lucky few “super agers,” and define them as “people aged 80 years and older who have performance on memory tests comparable to people two to three decades younger.” While we are not sure why super agers retain such strong cognitive skills, scientists say it could be they started out with a larger, more robust brain.

Keep Bones Strong With Exercise

Did you know over half of the women in America are older than 50 and up to a quarter of men will break a bone because of osteoporosis according to the Harvard Medical School. To prevent bones from weakening, the National Institute of Health says exercise is key to keeping bones strong. 

If you are taking prescription drugs, you should read the fine print that comes with your medications to see if you are taking any drugs that can lead to bone loss, increase your risk of a fall, and/or increase your risk of breaking a bone. Steroids, blood thinners and thyroid medications as well as drugs used to treat acid reflux, depression and some antibiotics are just a few of the medications known to interfere with bone health. 

The Mayo Clinic suggests that to aid in the prevention of bone loss, weight-bearing exercises should be part of your daily aerobic activities. Weight-bearing exercises involve your bones supporting your weight. Examples include walking, dancing, low-impact aerobics, elliptical training machines, stair climbing and gardening. Along with slowing down mineral loss, these exercises also provide some protection toward better cardiovascular health. 

In addition to weight-bearing exercises, doctors remind older adults to additionally do exercises that focus on balance, strength and flexibility. The NIH recommends for better bone health you should do at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity exercise OR at least 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity exercise.

A bone density test can help you determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis and/or whether you already have some bone loss. If your test’s result indicates a problem, your healthcare provider may suggest you take osteoporosis medicine to help reduce further bone loss. Study Shows a Positive View of Aging Leads to a Longer Life

However, they report if a person shifts to a more positive way of thinking, the adverse outcome may be mitigated.   

Dr. Manfred Diehl, professor of human development and family studies at Colorado State University, advises people on how to develop a more positive approach to aging. His first recommendation is to be physically active at least 30 minutes each day. Then he says to keep your brain active and challenge it by continuing to learn new things. Other tips include: get enough sleep each night, stop smoking, avoid excessive alcohol, maintain a healthy weight and follow a healthy diet. Dr. Diehl says a healthy social life is important and to nurture a healthy relationship with your spouse, family and friends.

Drug Recalls are Common in the United States 

We all applaud the numerous life-saving medications that help many people enjoy a higher quality of life than they may have experienced without these wonder drugs. In the US, the FDA is in charge of approving the medications that come to market in our country and ensuring they are safe and effective. 

While each new prescription drug is carefully looked at by the experts at the FDA before it is granted approval, over the last ten years statistics show there were more than 14,000 drugs recalled. This adds up to an average of almost four recalls a day.  

Experts say although the numbers sound alarming, in most cases, the FDA is aware of any side effects and risks the drug has before it is made available to the public. According to an article from the Harvard Medical School, there are several explanations as to why things are missed after approval, and a drug is deemed unsafe and recalled.

The most likely reason is drug clinical trials are typically done with at most a couple of thousand people. After a drug is widely used by tens of thousands, rare reactions may turn up. Secondly, clinical trial participants are generally healthy in order to produce better trial results. Once the general public is using the drug, it may not work like it did during trials. Problems can also crop up because people are using other drugs as well.

Other complications resulting in a drug being recalled include poor manufacturing processes including bacterial contamination or problems with mislabeling and storage. In some cases, incidences of recalls are due to manufacturers adding additional drugs that were never in the original medication. 

Thankfully most recalls are not life-threatening or dangerous to the user. Only 6 percent of recalls are Class I. This is where the drug is deemed dangerous and poses a serious health risk. The majority of recalls fall into the Class II category where a drug may present a less serious health risk or a temporary one. Many times it is a matter of a drug being improperly stored such as a too hot location.  

To safeguard yourself, you can sign up for texts or emails from the FDA regarding safety alerts and recalls on drugs. Additionally, pharmacists advise patients to carefully examine their new prescription for the correct color and broken or crumbling pills.
