Best Natural Pain Relief for Seniors

Unfortunately, as we age, our bodies also age and can no longer work as efficiently and effectively as they used to. Sometimes, this can lead to certain conditions that cause chronic pain. This pain can be a huge detriment to your overall quality of life, and can also contribute to mental health issues like depression. However, if you are looking for natural ways to manage pain as an elderly person, then keep reading for more information on the best natural pain relief options available for any senior in assisted living in Lakewood

Hot and Cold Therapy

A hot water bottle or heating pad can be a great way to soothe deep aches from conditions that cause joint pain. Heat can promote increased blood flow and loosening of muscles and other tightened areas that are causing pain.

Alternatively, a skin-safe cold pack can help with painful, swelling pain. If you have painful areas that become swollen, cold therapy can help minimize that swelling and inflammation.

Always keep in mind that hot and cold therapy needs to be done properly, using temperatures that are not extreme so you can avoid being burned by something too hot or too cold on your skin.

Ginger, Turmeric, and Curcumin

Ginger, turmeric, and curcumin have all been used in medicine for pain management for centuries. Always remember that natural medicine is original medicine, and can be more effective than you may think. These plants are well known for their pain relieving properties, and are powerful anti-inflammatories. Ginger and turmeric are also able to prevent inflammation as well as reduce it, and can also help fight infections with antibacterial properties. Keep in mind that if you do decide to take supplements, always clear it with your primary care provider to prevent any negative interactions with other medications and/or conditions. Also, when taking turmeric, make sure it also contains curcumin, as this helps to unlock more of the valuable benefits of turmeric.

Massage with Oils and Balms

Getting a professional massage is a fantastic way to manage chronic pain in a non-invasive way. In addition to the actual massage itself, the oils and balms used can also have targeted benefits for your specific needs and conditions. For example, if you use a menthol-based balm, it will have a cooling effect that can be very soothing. Another great base for an oil and/or balm is capsaicin. This is the substance that gives peppers their spice, and can give a warming effect where it is needed most.

Are Hot or Cold Showers Best for Seniors?

Many families mistakenly think senior living and particularly assisted living is just a more luxurious nursing home. The fact is nursing homes are intended for people who are unable to care for themselves due to physical or mental conditions and require around-the-clock skilled nursing care. Residents may be bedridden or in wheelchairs and receive ongoing palliative and preventative long-term care.

Assisted living is for seniors who are mostly independent but require help with what is known as Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include things like dressing, bathing and other personal care activities. In some cases, people move into a community which offers assisted living knowing that while they do not now need assistance with such tasks, they may need help in the near future.

Assisted living also makes sense for seniors who are looking for more companionship and love the security of knowing they are not alone. As many senior living communities such as MorningStar of Boise have an emergency call system in each suite, you can rest easy knowing help is just minutes away. Another perk of MorningStar is we offer scheduled transportation so you will never have to worry about getting to your doctor appointments and other important errands.

Moreover, while MorningStar’s suites vary in size and number of bedrooms, all our suites are smartly designed to make the most of the space they offer with high ceilings, lots of natural light, and kitchenette with fridge and microwave. In addition, residents often tell us what a relief it was to give up their large family homes that were hard to keep clean as well as all of the maintenance required. Residents also enjoy weekly housekeeping and delicious meals they no longer need to cook.

MorningStar offers the kind of retirement home Boise area families have come to count on. Along with assisted living, we provide independent living, respite care, (short recuperative stays) and trial stays from one week up to a full month to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003. We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Seniors Who Report Loneliness Are at High Risk for Diseases

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), statistics show seniors who report feelings of loneliness are at higher risk for several diseases including dementia and are more likely to experience premature death. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) says “one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.” Social isolation is a lack of social connections and a result of a person living alone, having a spouse and/or other supportive friends or relatives die, or suffering from chronic illness. Other related problems include a lack of transportation, mobility impairment and untreated hearing loss, which all limit the senior’s opportunity to engage with others.

AARP Research surveyed adults 45 and older regarding their feelings of loneliness. Of those respondents who rated their health as excellent, only 25 percent said they were lonely. Among participants who said their health was poor, 55 percent reported feeling lonely. The CDC also says studies find social isolation or loneliness is linked to a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke as well as a 50% percent increased risk of dementia.

Families Can Become Overprotective of Aging Parents

We all understand the value of independence but as we grow older, many seniors are faced with physical and mental limitations that make them feel it may be threatened. Independence is one of the few things seniors want to feel they still have control over; and is important as it is closely tied to self-worth and a sense of achievement.

Experts say well-intentional families can sometimes create bigger problems by becoming overprotective toward mom or dad. This can result in the senior becoming more fearful than the situation warrants, and erode their self-esteem and confidence. Another problem threatening a senior’s independence is when adult children talk to the parent as if they are a child. Even the most conscientious caregivers can sometimes baby the person way too much or pressure them to do what they think is best.

Just as we do not want people telling us what to do or intruding into things we are not ready to share, you need to respect your parents’ privacy. When mom or dad’s wishes are respected, they will feel like they have more control of their lives. If a time comes when your parents’ need more help than they can get at home, it may be time to look into an assisted living community. Just be sure it is one where they will be respected and their independence will be nurtured.

If you are exploring assisted living communities, MorningStar of Mission Viejo is one you should put on the top of your list. Our beautiful home is designed to meet all the needs of our residents with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities.  Please contact us for more information about senior living at MorningStar and be sure to ask about our Move-in specials.

The Importance of Routine Skin Checks

The Skin Care Foundation reports most common cancer in the US is of the skin and strikes one in five people by age 70. The good news is 99 percent of all cases are curable if they are diagnosed and treated early enough. However, to spot skin cancer, we need to look for it, which is why doctors recommend adults to do a routine skin check once a month and to have an annual skin check with a dermatologist at least once a year.

Since we are the best ones to notice any changes in our skin, it helps to know what to look for. Experts explain skin cancers appear in many shapes and sizes, and warning signs are associated with the different types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) (also called basal cell skin cancer) is the most common type of skin cancer accounting for 8 out of 10 cases. Basal cell cancer starts in the basal cell layer (the lower part of the epidermis).

The Mayo Clinic explains that squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin. While not life-threatening, it can be aggressive and typically occurs on sun-exposed skin including the scalp, the backs the hands, ears or lips, but can also occur on any part of the body.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer and generally develops anywhere in the body that has been exposed to UV light. Additionally it may be found in spots not typically exposed to sunlight such as the bottom of the feet. The Mayo Clinic says melanoma can start as a change in an existing mole or a development of a new pigmented or unusual-looking growth on the skin.

It is important to avoid UV light from the sun or tanning beds as it is one of the top culprits to damaging and aging the skin as well as causing skin cancer. Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have a sore or scab that doesn't heal in about two months or a flat patch of scaly skin that doesn’t go away.

Finding an Assisted Living Community for Yourself or a Loved One

According to the US Census Bureau’s statistics, there were an estimated 56 million adults ages 65 years and older, accounting for approximately 16.8% of the nation's population as of 2021. An aging population means the number of seniors who require help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) will continue to grow as will the necessity for assisted living communities to address those needs.

The National Center for Assisted Living, a non-profit organization representing assisted living facilities across the country, explains, "Assisted living is part of a continuum of long-term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.”

So how do you decide the best fit for yourself or a loved one when it comes to an assisted living community? Experts say begin by researching who regulates assisted living in your state and the type of regulations in place. Then begin looking at individual homes. The most important thing is to ensure the home provides the level of care you or your loved one needs now and will need over the next several years as you don’t want to have to make another move in a couple of years.

Affordability is another consideration. Consulting with an elder care attorney can be helpful in exploring creative ways to pay for assisted living. Also, you will want a location convenient for family and friends, and for getting to doctor’s appointments, shopping and more.

Finally, consider the amenities and activities. Does the community have inviting common areas for visitors? What type of onsite amenities would you desire? A salon, theater or chapel? Are the activities or hobbies you enjoy such as crafting or bridge available?

At MorningStar of Hayward, we offer assisted living along with independent living and memory care. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Please visit our website to learn more about exceptional assisted living in Hayward, CA.

What is the Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living?

Have you been thinking it’s time for a change in your living arrangements and would love a more manageable, relaxed lifestyle? If you have started looking into senior living options in Boise your next question may be “what is the difference between independent living and assisted living, and which one is best suited to my needs?”

Independent living is ideal for active seniors who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle. While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, wellness programs, day trips and meals. It is also perfect for those who love the sound of predictable budgeting, community living and built-in companionship. Care services are not provided but being a resident in an independent community may give you priority for a move into assisted living if the need should arise.

Assisted living is designed for seniors who need help with everyday activities in order to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. Communities will have an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour care. Generally, a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family. Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

At MorningStar of Boise, you will discover senior living at it’s best. Our community is designed to enhance the lives of our residents and provide a home where seniors can safely, and comfortably age in place. Along with inviting common areas both inside and out, we offer a range of amenities and wellness programs to promote a healthy and engaged lifestyle. Our stylish apartments come in a variety of one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans, and we are pet friendly. Advance Care Planning Gives You a Voice in Your Future Medical Decisions

An advanced directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signing away their lives, and/or don’t like thinking about being so ill they are unable to make decisions.

Advance care planning documents may include a living will, power of attorney and health care proxy. By planning ahead, they guide decisions made on your behalf if you are unable, and suffer from an incurable, irreversible illness, condition or disease determined to be terminal. Living wills specify the kind of medical treatment desired and many simply express the desire to not be given life-sustaining measures that only serve to prolong a person’s death. Specific details may regard care including the use of pain medications, antibiotics, hydration, feeding and the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or ventilators.

A health care proxy is someone designated to express your wishes for medical care and has the same rights you would in requesting or refusing treatment. A durable power of attorney document names a person to act on your behalf if you are incapacitated and gives them the power to make financial decisions.

The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover, refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

If you are looking for independent or assisted living in Boise, MorningStar may be your answer. We offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting. Our beautiful home has apartments in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need. Actively Participating in Your Medical Care May Reduce Medical Errors

Experts suggest that a good way to reduce medical errors regarding your care or that of a loved one is to be an active partner in the process whether in a hospital setting, doctors’ office or the pharmacy.  The World Health Organization reports “an estimated 10% of patients in high-income countries are harmed while receiving hospital care.”  Also, according to a 2021 report in StatPearls, “medical errors result in about 100,000 deaths in hospitals and clinics annually.”

Furthermore, studies show the most harmful errors in primary and outpatient health care settings are related to diagnoses, prescriptions and use of medicines.  Mistakes associated with misdiagnosis resulted in delayed treatment for the real problem and having the wrong drugs prescribed.

However, it is important to keep in mind that some medical errors are a result of patients failing to disclose all of the medications they take including prescription and over-the-counter drugs.  Another problem is the failure to reveal pertinent details regarding a person’s prior medical history as well as lifestyle habits such as smoking, diet and alcohol consumption.

Medical professionals say to remember the time spent with your doctor is short, so to help prevent errors with care, come prepared to your appointment by putting in writing critical points you wish to discuss.  The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore has a QuestionBuilder app available by AHRQ at Google Play or the Apple App store to help you focus on the questions you need to ask during your appointment.

Other things to do before the appointment include putting together a list of medications you take, the dosage, and why you take it.  If you worry about forgetting something you were told during the visit, take along a family member or trusted friend.  Also ask questions and seek a second opinion if it would make you more comfortable.  Most importantly if a medical problem is not getting better, remain persistent in addressing it with your medical team.

At MorningStar of Hayward, our goal is to provide the best independent and assisted living Hayward, CA offers, and we provide all the services needed to support and enhance our residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. The Move into a Senior Living Community

If you are moving from your own home into an independent or assisted living community, most likely you will want to downsize. While it can sound overwhelming to go through a whole household of stuff and whittle it down to fit into a modest sized apartment, a few tips will help.

Without question it is a lot of work and can be stressful and emotional but the Internet offers lots of useful information from organizing experts. Most say the trick is to prepare in advance by making a plan and allowing plenty of time. Remember, if you are interested, there are companies who offer these services and will do everything from helping with the downsizing process to packing up, and moving your things to your new home.

Now you are ready for the sorting out process deciding what you will bring and what to give to family, donate, or throw away. This is the hardest task as your house is full of memories but again here is where a system works. Experts say sort by rooms and simplify the task by making a “yes” pile and a “no” pile. They warn not to make a “maybe” pile as it can end up growing in size and complicate your plan. Again, remember the goal is to simplify your life and not overcrowd the new place with useless stuff.

Things to consider are the size of your new place and its layout (get measurements). You will want furniture scaled to fit as well as room for hobbies or musical instruments that are important to you. Also consider the amenities your new place offers such as a dining service. If most of your meals will be prepared by your new community, you will just need the basics in your kitchen. If the new place has a fitness center, there is no need to bring your own equipment.

MorningStar of Mission Viejo is a 55+ independent and assisted living community that offers a vibrant, active lifestyle. Residents enjoy carefree retirement years as we handle the maintenance and provide onsite luxury amenities, care services and a community of friends. Do You Feel Memory Problems are Interfering With Your Life?

Do you feel as if memory problems are interfering with your life or have family members started to notice? Medical experts say there may be a distinction between a person noticing the memory loss and others becoming aware of it as this could signal a bigger problem and be an early sign of dementia.

The Harvard Medical School explains the best place to start understanding the problem is to talk to your doctor. While they may not have the proper training to do extensive screening for MCI (mild cognitive impairment), they can rule out other things causing your memory loss such as medications you take or a recent head injury. Steps you can take on your own to improve cognitive function include getting enough sleep each night, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress.

After your own physician has completed an examination, and nothing appears to explain your memory loss, it is time to see a specialist. They, or your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or hospital should be able to recommend a behavioral neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist. He or she will probably start with a series of written, on the computer, or oral tests to “assess memory, reasoning, attention, language, visual functions, motor functions, and social functions (such as empathy and knowing how to behave appropriately in social situations).”

They will check for “abnormalities in muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, eye movement, and the pupils’ reaction to light, which can signal abnormalities in specific areas of the brain.” In addition, the doctor will check for Parkinson’s, a stroke or tumors, and will probably schedule a hearing and vision test. If indicated, you may have advanced testing such as PET scans or your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers checked for signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Mission Viejo has suites devoted to the individualized care of those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our Reflections Neighborhood was designed to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to celebrate and elevate life. It’s Important to See a Doctor if Your Worried About Memory Loss

The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that anyone worried about memory loss make an appointment with their health care provider. While we all know it is scary just thinking about the possibility of having Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has a list of reasons why it is to your advantage to know.

The process for getting a diagnosis starts with a full evaluation with a healthcare provider that includes your medical history and any medications you are taking as well as a series of mental status tests. If the initial evaluation indicates problems, your doctor will recommend further physical and neurological exams, diagnostic tests and brain imaging.

One of the top reasons to be evaluated for Alzheimer’s is your symptoms may be from another treatable cause. If it is determined you have Alzheimer’s, experts explain that while there is no cure for the disease, there are treatment options that can lessen the symptoms including memory loss and confusion for a limited time. Also, they say an early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from treatment.

An early diagnosis also means you may be eligible for clinical trials that could provide some medical benefit. In addition, recent research suggests that certain lifestyle changes such as “controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.”

Perhaps most importantly you will have more time to plan for your future and to do things now, rather than wait. Planning for the future also helps family members know what your wishes are and prevents future feelings of guilt or arguments over your care. The Alzheimer’s Association adds that an early diagnosis can save your family and the U.S. Government money spent on care.

At MorningStar Senior Living of Hayward, we offer loving memory care in our Reflections Neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our community is staffed by a team of individuals who understands the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness. Best Summer Clothing for Seniors

Staying cool in the summer is a very important priority for many seniors. Since this age demographic is particularly susceptible to heat, it is vital to be proactive as temperatures rise. Heat stroke can happen quickly, so having a few tricks to stay cool this summer could make all the difference. If you are a senior in assisted living in Lakewood, keep reading to learn about the best kinds of clothes to wear to stay cool this summer.

Keep it Loose

Loose-fitting clothes are a great way to stay cool in the heat of summer. When you wear tight clothes, you end up not having enough room for air to move between your skin and the fabric. This can make you sweat more, making you feel uncomfortable, as well as dehydrate you more quickly. So, instead of wearing tight clothes that do not allow your skin to “breathe,” opt for looser outfits that let you feel the breeze. If loose long sleeves bother you, you can also wear loose-fitting short sleeved shirts or tank tops as well. However, if you choose to go sleeveless, try wearing a wide-brimmed, floppy hat to help protect your skin from direct sunlight.

Color Matters

Believe it or not, the color of your clothing can actually impact how much you are affected by the heat. Darker clothing will actually absorb and hold onto the sunlight. This means you will end up feeling much hotter while wearing dark colors like black. However, light colored clothing actually reflects sunlight and bounces some of the heat off of you. This way, you will feel much cooler in colors like beige, white, and other light colors. If dark colors are more your thing, consider wearing a light colored cardigan over your outfit, so you can take advantage of the cooling effect. Or, you can also carry a pastel colored parasol or umbrella to keep the sun’s rays off of you completely.

Try Layering

Layering can also be a great trick for staying cool in the summer months. If you get cold in the mornings, but warmer as the day progresses, layering could be the perfect option for you to stay warm when you need it, and cool when you need it as well. You can start out with a few, loose layers; and then remove them as you start to warm up. This is also a fabulous way to keep your skin out of direct sunlight, and can help you minimize the risks of prolonged sun exposure, and harmful UV rays. Of course, if you are not a fan of the idea of layering, there are a few other things you can do to help: wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and/or even carry an umbrella.

Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living Lakewood has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Heart Disease in Women is Often Misdiagnosed

The online journal, Medical News Today’s reports women and girls across the world still face challenges and discrimination in medical settings both as patients and prospective medical workers. One example of an area in which women’s medical health is often overlooked and misdiagnosed is coronary heart disease (CHD) despite the fact that it is the leading cause of death for women.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute explains CHD occurs when the arteries delivering oxygenated blood into the heart (where it is pumped out to the other organs) are not able to “service” the heart effectively. Studies show women may also be more at risk for developing non-obstructive CHD, a condition that causes the arteries going into the heart to be abnormally squeezed by surrounding tissue.

CHD symptoms can vary between individuals as well as differ in men and women; and non-obstructive CHD can be symptom-less and go undetected for years. To complicate matters, research shows women’s symptoms are atypical and include things like “back pain, burning in the chest, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or fatigue — which makes the diagnosis more difficult.” Additionally, studies show part of the problem is too often women wait to get medical attention. Sadly, it is frequently after the disease has progressed, and the damage is harder to treat. Researchers also say most of the CHD studies done in the past have concentrated on men and have underrepresented women. Hopefully in the future, more women will be included.

It’s Time to Enjoy the Plentiful Selection of Fruits and Vegetables

With summer finally here, so is a plentiful selection of fresh, garden-grown fruits and vegetables in our supermarkets, farmer’s markets and produce stands. As dietitians recommend adults eat at least three servings of vegetables a day and two of fruit, summer’s yummy selection makes it easier and tastier to do. The US News & World Report published an article with a review of some of the five healthiest in-season fruits and vegetables to eat at mealtime or for snacks.

The first recommendation is cherries. Across the country you will find a delicious assortment including Bing and Van, and the Rainer, a premium cherry that is a cross between Bing and Van as well as both sweet and tart varieties. A cup of cherries (about 21) has 90 calories, three grams of fiber, and is a good source of potassium and vitamin C. ``Cherries are also a great source of anthocyanins, which offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardiovascular and other benefits.” Research has found cherries can improve sleep and help relieve gout.

The next group of some of the season’s favorites is various garden fresh, leafy greens. These include lettuce, arugula, watercress, spinach, kale and romaine. Studies show leafy greens can help lessen the risk of heart disease, macular degeneration, cancer and other conditions. Not only do they taste good but are easy to add to a variety of foods.

Studies find strawberries are another superfood and provide a range of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and fiber. They are easy to eat as is or can be added to a variety of dishes.

Not only do summer tomatoes taste better but experts say the tomatoes we buy now are superior to tomatoes we buy during the rest of the year. They are a good source of vitamin C and lycopene, “a potent antioxidant that helps protect your eyesight, provides anti-cancer properties and heart health benefits.” The last food the article mentioned is watermelon, which is typically a requirement at any summertime gathering. Watermelon is a great way to rehydrate as it is 92% water; and like tomatoes, it too contains the beneficial lycopene.

At MorningStar of Mission Viejo, we believe that diet is the centerpiece of personal wellness. As a resident you will be treated to a variety of seasonal menus featuring the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced whenever possible. We also use ingredients with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds known to support brain health and aptly named “Super Foods.” These include items like berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate and greens. For unsurpassed independent or assisted living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect assisted living community to comfortably and safely age in place.

The Benefits of Joining a Gardening Program in Your Assisted Living Community

Gardening has been a popular pastime for centuries. With gardening, you can relax your mind and provide your body with gentle activity, all while enjoying the journey of harvesting your own food.

Because of these benefits, many assisted living communities offer a gardening program. These programs offer you the ability to gather, socialize, and share in meaningful projects with other residents as you nurture your green thumb. And anyone can join an assisted living gardening program, no matter their experience level.

Here’s why you should consider gardening in your own assisted living community.

Stress Relief

Gardening keeps your hands and brain busy, so you have less time to think about life stressors.

The physical movements involved in digging, planting, and watering your garden can also knock out your stress. These natural movements help you stay active without having to opt for more strenuous exercise.

If you find yourself struggling to unwind in the evenings, consider joining your assisted living community’s gardening program.

Keep Your Mind Sharp and Active

It’s important to protect your cognitive skills at every age, but gardening offers particular benefits for seniors when it comes to brain health.

Activities like gardening that require active thinking and motor control have been shown to reduce seniors’ risk for dementia by as much as 36%. By joining your community’s gardening program, you can keep your mind sharp in a fun, productive way.

So get out there and garden to boost your brain health!

Immune Health Benefits

The old saying, “Some dirt won’t hurt you,” holds true — spending time gardening can boost your health in surprising ways.

Your immune system is responsible for keeping your body healthy, strong, and functioning at its best. Spending time outdoors, particularly near soil, has been shown to improve immune function over time.

This is likely because soil contains beneficial microorganisms that help train the immune system to better fight against many common ailments, from allergies to asthma.

You also get more sun exposure — and therefore, more vitamin D — when you’re out in the sunshine.

Social Opportunities

Socializing can be daunting for many new residents of assisted living communities. Your community’s gardening program is just the thing you need to make new friends.

People who garden together often share ideas, discuss their daily lives, and build friendships over time. Try out your community gardening program, and you might meet some new best friends!

Productivity

Some seniors struggle with feeling productive and useful in their communities at first. Assisted living gardening programs are designed to give you a sense of purpose and accomplishment. You can take care of living things — plants — without the pressure or stress of deadlines.

Try Gardening in Your Community

There’s no harm in trying out your community garden program to see if you like it. Take a chance and start a garden with fellow residents — you never know where it might lead you!

Learn More About Father’s Day

Father’s Day was first officially celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. It then took another 58 years (in 1972) after President Woodrow Wilson had declared Mother’s Day to be an official holiday for dads to get their own official national holiday. This year Father’s Day is June 18, as the holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month.

The earliest public event honoring fathers was in 1908 at a West Virginia church. It was held in memory of 362 area men who had been killed in a tragic coal mine accident the year before. It was a one-time commemoration and not intended to be an annual holiday.

The first recognized celebration of all fathers took place at the Spokane, WA YMCA on June 19, 1910. It was organized by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, William Jackson Smart was a single parent who raised six children. Ms. Dodd had heard a sermon about the Mother’s Day celebration at Central Methodist Episcopal Church a year earlier and encouraged her church to have a similar event honoring fathers. She had wanted it to be on her father’s birthday, June 5th, but her church’s pastors needed more time to prepare sermons so it was held on the third Sunday of the month.

Our fathers hold a special place in our hearts and certainly deserve to have their “own day;” however getting fathers nationally recognized was not as easy as it had been to get a designated national holiday for mothers. Throughout the years there were efforts to make it a national holiday but it never moved forward. It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation honoring fathers, and designated the third Sunday as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law.

For exceptional independent and assisted living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Hayward. We offer luxury senior living for the area’s beloved “mothers” and “fathers.” Our beautiful community is designed to meet residents’ every need.
